Unconditional Love!

What does Unconditional Love mean to you? How would you characterize its components, origin and accessibility in your life?

Is it easier for you to show unconditional love to others, to yourself or both equally well? Do you show yourself unconditional love or do you hold yourself back and give it all away? Does someone have to earn, be worthy or deserving of unconditional love to receive it? If someone hurts, angers or disappoints you, do you continue to love them unconditionally or do you stop? If you stop, are you able to regain it later on? If you are triggered by nasty words or actions of a friend, family member, colleague or lover, inappropriate hostility from a fellow driver, or approached by a frightening homeless person wanting a handout, can you feel unconditional love for them all? The biblical phrase “love your enemy” is a wonderful goal, insomuch that someone wants to embrace it. You know where your comfort level is around how and who to love in your life. So, which category do you fall into?

The best way I can think of describing unconditional love in its purest and most fundamental form is the bond that a parent has for their child. Children love their parents unconditionally, as well. Ideally, when unconditional love is expressed, unchanging love and acceptance flourishes. To a parent who loves their child unconditionally, the child’s performance, attitudes, decisions, values and the affection felt and shared between them is unchanging and unconditional- aside from anything else. A child loves their parent, without having the perfect caregiver too, their
need so instinctive and primary. Unconditional love however, doesn’t assure the absence of struggle or conflict. It only assures that no matter what, love is at the root of the relationship, in its most basic and all-encompassing form. There is no hesitation to love; no limit withholding its real expression. If you use the parent-child relationship as the ideal teacher of what unconditional love is, all other relationships would benefit. Strong, deep romantic love relationships also have the core element of loving and being loved without conditions. Whether you define unconditional love as empathy, acceptance, forgiveness, a mirror to reflect back to you or anything else- its merits are worth taking a look at. Once you discover how and who you love and why, and who you may not want to extend yourself to, your self-awareness grows. After all, isn’t one major reason that we are all here?
