Depression…what to do?!

This post is in memory of Robin Williams. We have lost a remarkably brilliant comic mind and acting legend. He had a unique ability to connect with people and with his exquisitely immense humor, despite his own personal struggle. Despite 20 years of sobriety, Robin was about to get help again for his depression. Sadly, he never made it back to the path of healing and chose to end his life and the pain that was too heavy for him to carry any longer.

There are treatments both medically and non-medically that help individuals with depression and other mood disorders. It is important to evaluate and exhaust all possibilities when seeking help and relief. For some, being diagnosed with clinical depression requires medication, psychotherapy or psychiatry. For others, situational depression comes and goes, like riding the waves of challenging life events. In both cases, there are natural alternatives to incorporate into daily living designed to uplift moods that reduce negative patterns, severe discomfort and help quiet anxiety. Unfortunately, self-medication and suicide do occur with depression whether chronic or acute, as the individual feels drained, low energy, overly anxious, emotionless and purposeless. If untreated for a long time, physical pain, self-injury and suicidal thoughts or attempts may occur. Tragically, a whopping 34,000 lives are lost annually in the U.S. from suicide; 40% are in middle age. Sadly, some medications heighten suicidal ideation, but can be regulated by skilled professionals. Still, the medications available are not always the most sufficient or safe solutions. There needs to be a more effective cure for this widespread affliction.

A good rule of thumb is to reach out for emotional support and then incorporate healthy outlets and self-care. Some ideas for dealing with depression include getting many hugs a day, massage, engaging in regular exercise, avoiding or regulating trigger foods such as sugar, caffeine and alcohol, joining supportive and interesting groups, scheduling for fun and practicing meditation. Therapy and life coaching can offer pragmatic and creative ways to let go and relax, too. The important thing is to be motivated enough to seek out solutions for the internal psychological and emotional (and associated physical) pain that debilitates and prevents a sense of inner peace. Everyone deserves to feel good inside and happy about their life. Let’s do all that we can to support those suffering with depression, mood disorders and mental illness- and remove the stigma already!
